Looking back to when I was in grad school trying to earn my degree in creative writing, each time I sent work in to my mentor teacher I began with some sort of disclaimer or excuse about why I didn’t write as much or as well as I had planned. I remember that when I sent my list of excuses to Wendy Bishop, she wrote back essentially telling me not to make excuses. She said, in the end, there’s only writing or not writing. And writing is more fun.
When I looked back at this blog page and saw how long it’s been since I posted anything, my initial reaction was to do the same thing. I thought, I should explain (read make excuses) about what I’ve been doing and why I haven’t posted….
Clearly I haven’t done much writing lately. It happens. Sometimes life gets in the way of doing what we love and what are most passionate about. Going forward, I’ll try to do better. I’ll try to remember my voice and why it matters. But I’m not going to beat myself up (or make excuses). I’ll do my best to remember Wendy’s words and to make space for writing.
What do you do when life gets in your way? Do you always make time for your passions?
Happy New Year!
